When General David Petraeus took over as the U.S. commander in Iraq, the war on terror and the fight to protect, and provide, freedom had many detractors. Petraeus served as a commander and a leader for nearly two years, and I ask you to join me to thank General Petraeus. Earlier this week, General Petraeus stepped down from his duties after serving 20 months with honor and integrity. General Ray Odierno will be taking over these duties.

These are two wonderful warriors who love their country. They have spent significant parts of their lives away from their families in defense of our country and our freedoms. I appreciate their willingness to continue to serve as we move into the next phase in the War against Islamic Jihadist.

General Petraeus served in what was arguably the toughest battle on the war on terror. During his tenure, our military 'surge' made cities safe and brought peace where terrorists ruled with bombs, guns and violence. General Petraeus faced public detractors at home by organizations and politicians who would rather quit and leave the Iraqis. We should thank General Petreaus for having courage to continue his duties in the face of such hollow criticism. His hard work has proven his critics wrong. He has proven America's military is committed to its mission. And General Petreaus has proven that our faith and support in our troops abroad will bear fruit even in the toughest of circumstances.

For this and more, I thank General Petraeus and wish him well.
