Seeking an "all-of-the-above energy plan"

Submitted by Mike Conaway on August 4, 2008 - 1:15pm.

Even though I am scheduled to be in Texas today, I chose to remain in Washington to participate in the GOP effort to draw attention to America’s current energy situation, and to the fact that we in the House were prevented from voting on a substantive, comprehensive energy plan in June or in July.

This week’s activities will involve everybody who is near the Capitol. There will be no television or audio coverage because the cameras, the microphones, and even the lights have been turned off (and I suspect the air conditioning will be eventually turned off) in order to squelch this attempt by House Republicans to call attention to this important issue. We will be on the House floor and the steps of the U.S. Capitol Building talking with visitors about the current energy crisis we are facing and Democrat inaction.

It is disappointing that we have reached this point. For months, we have been attempting to get a simple up-or-down vote on environmentally sensitive drilling for oil on the Outer Continental Shelf. There has been a groundswell of support for this among the American people, as well, as gasoline prices have climbed over the $4 mark per gallon.

The problem and solution are quite simple. We import millions of barrels of crude oil every single day from countries that – at best – are not our allies. It is only logical to conclude that every barrel we are able to produce here at home is a barrel that we don't have to buy from someone who may turn and invest that money in terrorist operations against our country.

Simply having the ability to replace the barrels of oil we import every single day from foreign countries with American-produced crude oil is, in my view, enough of a reason to drill on the Outer Continental Shelf. As has long been proven, we can do that drilling in an environmentally-sensitive and responsible way.

This is the question: Do we want to produce American resources of crude oil and other energy, or do we want to continue depending on energy purchased from countries which, as I mentioned before, are at best not our allies?

This week’s efforts, while Congress is out of session, are being made in an attempt to draw attention to this issue. We would prefer the President or Speaker to call Congress back into session this August; however at the very least, we hope to put additional pressure on Speaker Pelosi to grant an up-or-down vote on drilling on the Outer Continental Shelf once Congress returns to session in September.

Drilling alone will not solve our energy problems. There must also be nuclear, coal, coal-to-liquids, solar, and wind components to this comprehensive, “all of the above” energy plan. However, if we are to solve the current crisis, drilling must be a component, as well.

Congress should return to session as soon as possible and be allowed to vote on this measure.

Energy

It seems to me that if we drill off our own coasts, and ANWR, we would be creating jobs, keeping revenue here, as well as minimize the risks of long distance shipping. We should develop new technology, but in the meantime explore every option. This idea isn't new, but it makes the most sense.

Energy Needs

We must become independent of foreign sources of energy. This requires immediate expansion of nuclear energy, drilling in the ANWR and on our coasts, converting coal to oil and exploring every alternative from shale to new oil fields. Then we need to seek alternative means of powering our automobiles and heating and cooling our homes.

http://www.letfreedomringblog.com/

If we're indeed currently importing approximately 70% of our oil from foreign nations, shouldn't we ask Democrats how they'd replace those imports TODAY?

Shouldn't we ask the Democrats if solar, wind, electric hybrids, etc. could replace a significant portion of our energy needs?

Shouldn't we ask Democrats what the solution to high gas prices is for OTR truckers? Or for farmers? After all, they don't have the option of conserving.

Energy Resources and the do nothing liberals

There is an interesting article written by Dan Kish of IER on the front page of Human Events, August 4, 2008 edition. It would appear that if the liberals do nothing/they can be kept at home; on October 1, 2008: "if Congress doesn't extend a year-by-year appropriations rider that has stopped oil-shale energy production for the past year, and OCS production for 27 years." "These bans will expire"..........Could it be this is the best energy policy? Do nothing and let the government policies expire. One wonders if crudes price retreat is due to traders and investors making an "orderly" exit from their long positions so as not to be on the wrong side of the market as October approaches

Yes, I believe we need to

Yes, I believe we need to drill here, drill now, even if what we are drilling today won't have an effect for a few years (neither will anything else that is being proposed). Drilling for oil is not the only answer and we must be working in all areas of energy production. Also, we should be offering auto companies tax benefits for producing highest mileage cars and non-gasoline fueled engines. Offer the oil companies tax benefits for coming up with new vehicle fuel systems (they have the infrastructure already in place to deliver all fuels for vehicles). Get us off the nipple of foreign oil. And, PLEASE, PLEASE, ask the American voting public, "do you want to stay dependent on oil from countries that hate us, feed money to their system to be used against us or do you want to have some American self-sufficiency for our future and the future of your children?" The American people's ingenuity can accomplish anything we put our mind to.

A vote of thanks

I am SO excited that the GOP is finally acting like the party of "Contract With America" I'm not a blueblood, country club liberal. I am a conservative. Thank you for being one of the annoying republican house members who are standing up for the American people. God Bless

Pure Madness

It is pure madness not to drill, drill, and drill some more anywhere in America where they may be oil. In addition we need to push forward on all fronts with any and all alternative energy solutions.

This is a winning strategy for the GOP this election and I applaud you and your fellow "Pubbies" for staying in Washington and doing the people's business.

OCS and ANWR

As I am not a voter in your area, I have been keeping tabs as Alaska and Texas are a vital part of the Energy Industry for the Nation.

I have always been a stout supporter for OCS and ANWR, in all ways. As I have worked on the Northern Slope of Alaska and have helped work with those who do offshore drilling, no one except Texans and Alaskans understand the needs of the people more.

Congressman Conaway, as I know my Senator, Lisa Murkowski is flying (or is there in D.C. now via many calls to her not just from me but many Alaskans), Please please PLEASE bring up the issue of ANWR as well and how the Democrats have stopped drilling anywhere known for the last 20 years. As it is a fact that opening up ANWR to drilling will get the Nation the much needed oil faster then just offshore. ANWR can be within a two year period, as offshore can take about four years as a rig and platform are available.

Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing more on this. You have my support for all those doing the "RIGHT" thing here in Alaska!

Thank you, upinak!

Energy

Thank you and you companions for staying in Washington and showing the nation the absolutely foolishness of Nancy Pelosi and the Democratically controlled congress. On to the energy.

I do favor drilling and have for several years. We have the ability to to dig a ditch from the Atlantic to the Pacific, put a man on the moon and we can't safely drill for oil in our own back yard!

I do favor a multi front approach as we will run out of oil sometime but not in my lifetime. We must press forward with drilling now and follow up with a strong alternative energy program such as solar, wind, and even ocean waves.

Quite frankly I don't really care if the moose population in Alaska drops because we are drilling there for oil. We do have people, human beings, in the United States that are now deciding whether to drive to church, work, or relatives or to the store to by groceries.

Thank you for this opportunity for allowing me to express my opinion.

Respectfully submitted,

Not One Single Silver Bullet

I truly believe we need to start drilling in Anwar, off the coast and anywhere within the US where oil resides. But, I also believe that as a nation, we need to include more options in developing a comprehensive energy policy. Drilling is not the only silver bullet but needs to include wind, nuclear, additional coal mining, solar, biofuels, synthetic fuels, and other alternative fuel sources. I believe our country needs to provide monetary grants to companies for successful development of alternative energy sources. All of this has to be coupled with accountability. Are the energy issues within our country, both short term and long term, demand a cabinet level position to shape the energy future of this country?

Energy

DRILL, Drill, Drill wherever it is reasonable economically feasible, no restrictions, even in my back yard or directly in front of our beach house.

Energy

China and India combined have a population of 2.5 BILLION people and their economies are growing very fast. Unless we find our own source of OIL, we will no longer be able to grow our own economy. It is time we DRILL offshore and in Alaska. We have the ability now to do it and do it safely. WE also have the ability to build nuclear power plants safely, if we can get past the wacko enviormentalists. France is getting about 75% of its power that way. We can also at the same time start the search for new alternative sources or find ways to transport wind and solar power and to store it.

INSTEAD OF BUILDING NEW OR BIGGER HIGHWAYS, it is time to devolope rapid transportation BETWEEN CITIES.

There is no reason we can not become self relaint on our own oil while searching for cleaner and better alternatives at the same time.

AND MORE TAXES ON OIL COMPANIES WILL NOT HELP, THAT COST WILL BE PAST ONTO THE CONSUMER.

I for one would like to see a class action lawsuit against our Congress for not doing the peoples business. It is time for the VOTER to take back our country!

Energy Policy

First off, fire warning shots at any environmentalist lobbyist who attempts to approach the Congress. These Socialists are NOT there to protect the environment.

Secondly, we must build nuclear power plants, oil refineries, and drill for oil here and now.

Third, the Republican Party must espouse Conservative Values once again and mend its fractured relationship with Conservatives. The Democrats are far left. We cannot be "centrist." Strong stances must be taken to combat the subversion of the left.

Finally, I am sick of wimpy politicians who make policy based on polls, instead of LEADING and REPRESENTING their constituents.

For the love of God (if the Party still even loves Him), we are in a culture war. Win the hearts and minds of patriotic Americans. Save this country!

Drill Domestically-Build Nuclear Plants-Build Infrastructure

This country needs to drill domestically to alleviate the need for foreign imports. We need to build nuclear power plants. We need to build the infrastructure for renewable energy sources such as bio-fuels.

We need to stop talking about it an get to doing. We have been having this discussion since the Carter administration 30-40 years ago. If the government would get out of the way and let the free market do what its good at, we would not be having this same problem 30-40 years later!

I remember the gas lines and shortages way back then. Believe me, I would prefer that as a nation we don't repeat our mistakes.

energy

Drill here, drill, now, and pay less; it's easy, people are waiting to do it and it will change things and I believe even the Dems know it, but don't want it unless they can get credit for it. Yes, go after all sources of energy, Nuclear, coal, wind, solar and whatever else that "truly" helps. No feel good measures that don't really change anything. Get off stuff that hurts our economy like corn based energy, it not profitable and it's hurting our food prices. These solutions are before us all and we just must do it! Let those who chose to stay and fight in Washington know, I support them in every way I can. I applaud your passion, keep it up.

Energy

My family and I are for drilling everywhere there is the possibility of finding oil. We also want more refineries built to process the oil. Cafe standards should be made standard across the US so that refineries don't have to retool all the time. Most of the standards don't do what they were intended for anyway, such as MTBE added to Calif. gas. It is a pollutent. Nuclear power plants should also be built ASAP alongwith new distribution lines.

Energy

First - Allow drilling in ANWAR and off shore.
Second - Open closed refineries and allow more to be opened.
Third - Allow and encourage the development of nuclear power plants, after all IF France can operate them safely...
Fourth - Provide incentives for the development of SAFE alternative fuel sources NOT ethanol!!

But NONE of this will come to pass until the Republicans in Congress start acting like REPUBLICANS and Conservatives again!!!

Energy

living in this state, it is impossible to get our congressman, (Defazio) to listen to the fact that we need to utilize our resources here, and stop depending upon others.
I support a broad approach to the problem, we are facing.
It would be good to find other sources of energy to run our economy, etc. But right now we need to drill here and use our oil and natural gas fields to help us in the transition to new technology, including nuclear.

Energy

South Africa has been producing synthetic diesel fuel for their use for a long time now and that in 1941 Germany was producing 740,000 tons of synthetic petroleum products a year.

WHAT ABOUT THIS?

Drill here and NOW

I haven't been able to find anyone that doesn't agree that we need to lift bans on drilling ... The Democrats in the House once again presume to say they know better than the people they represent... America is being distroyed from within and it is time to take back our ability to be independent from foreign countries that would be happy to see us fail. LETS DRILL AND LIFT THE RESTRICTIONS ON BUILDING MORE REFINERIES NOw!!!!!!

energy policy

Rational U.S. energy policy requires first of all a dsitinction between short-term and long-term considerations - this despite voter pressure to "do something now." Secondly, the difference between energy for transportation and energy for electric power generation must be explaned to the public. Thirdly, politicians and public must grasp that energy independence - if it ever existed - is impossible now: the world is inexorably tied together in these respects. The voter must be made to understand that even if we don't like dependence on hostile states there is little wrong for example in some dependence on North American neighbors Canada and Mexico. Reciprocity in trade is therefore a must.

I for one find the most depressing feature of the now ongoing pre-election rhetoric regarding energy policy is politician conflation of short-term "cures" with long-term necessary adjustments of our economy. Whether we "drill" or "not drill" off the California coast the results will have no noticeable impact for numerous years. Ditto for permits for nuclear power plants. Such would be very wise - but we would see them in operation only, say, 15-20 years down the road. Can politicians find a way to explain ralities to voters without going down to defeat in an upcoming election? If the answer is no, democratic government will go down the tubes - as such has happened over the centuries.

Let our Oil Companies Drill for Oil !!!!!

I appreciate you and your fellow Republicans effort to bring the vote to the floor. I heard, on the radio, how the house called for voice votes to adjoin the house, and then adjoined the house. What a disgrace. Please keep up your efforts. May that final voice vote available to more media members, put it on "you tube" and every other internet outlet. Make Americans aware of what is really going with the democrates and oil drilling.

Thank You

Oil- Buying vs. Producing

In general terms, we need to do a lot of things and get going right away.

Oil Purchases-- Even if we bought it all from Norway, we can't afford to spend $150 per barrel when we could produce it here. We need to keep this money in OUR economy.

Time to implement-- Sure it will take time, but we have to get started and it will affect futures markets because that is what they are about-- futures. And even if we had alternate technology tomorrow, it would take time to phase in. So even if our oil usage decreased, it would still be large for years.

Refining-- yes, there is a capacity shortage. South Dakota is working on initial stages of permits for construction of a new refinery. Are they the only ones capable of moving ahead on this? We need more.

We can do this cleanly and efficiently. If we were to be in a position where we had excess capacity, we could shut down the older, less efficient operations. Or become an exporter of clean (fossil) fuels cutting into OPEC's control. That is of course if Congress doesn't tax the producers into a position of being non-competitive.

The Party who takes the lead in pushing for what we can do should be a welcome alternative to the Party who's only answer is to inflate your tires and get a tune-up. Are you requesting that the President order a special session? In any case, keep working for what is right and necessary.

Thank you,
John Belfry

Gas/Oil Crisis

THANK YOU!!!!! To all of you who are standing up for the American people!!!!! We are hopeful and excited about what you're doing and believe the people's will is going to be served. We so very much applaud the stand you are all taking on our behalf and we believe it is going to be the single most influential action to change the direction of the Republican party in this election! It restores the faith of the people that we truly are heard and represented.

We are very much for opening up all the options available to us toward becoming energy independant as a nation and the other types of energy such as wind, solar etc are also to be explored, but they cannot replace oil/gas. We MUST DRILL NOW!!!! Again thank you for taking a stand for us!

oil crisis etc

Mr. Conway:

I heard we are selling a lot of our oil to Japan. True??? If so, why not curtail that activity and sell to Americans.

We should produce more of our own oil. If we expect to survive as a nation, we need to be independent upon other countries to survive.

Part of the problem here is not just oil. This country has walked away from the One Who gave it to us and He is trying to get our attention.

We can't delete Him from our schools, money, pledge and way of life and expect Him to ignore the fact we fail to hold Him as dear as He holds us!

There's more here than meets the eye!!! We had better wake up before it's too late!!!

Return America to America!!!

Energy

I cannot tell you how encouraged we are that the Republicans are FINALLY showing some spine for the first time in fifteen years.

Nancy Pelosi is breaking all the constitutional laws and getting away with it. This is wrong and against all the checks and balances in place to stop this type of railroading.

It is about time we are standing up for the American people and the best interests of our country.

Go to the mats. We are behind you 100%

Sincerely Yours,

Penelope H. Snow

Democrat's anti American energy policies.

First, based on my observations, I don't think you could get Pelosi off of square one no matter what you do, or don't do. The best way to get at them is You Tube, as you have, to some measure, already done. I do not need convincing, I have some sense. It is apparent that many of the democrat's constituency either do not have any, or they are lazy and just accept what these misguided, liberal, individuals and their leaders say. Of course if they get a bigger majority in the house, get a filibuster proof senate majority and let us not forget "Change you can believe in" Obama as president, I'd imagine that then they would move to do something, however the overwhelming desire by these miscreants is to make George Bush look as bad as they can, for as long as they can, while he holds office. I laud your desire to take the battle to them. The only other thing I can suggest is keep the message out there twenty-four seven that it is the liberal democrats who are holding us hostage to high gasoline prices and even worse things. If they call themselves patriots they lie through their teeth. I call them what they are, turncoats and traitors who have no desire other than the power of their office. Be assured that no democrat with the philosophy that is present within their ranks will ever get the time of day from me, much less a vote.

Energy Policy

DRILL, DRILL,DRILL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Energy & Nancy Pelosi

The answer to our immediate energy crissis is just plain old common sense. Pursue drilling within our own oil reach resources. Despite the fact that we will not see a drop of oil from those pursuits for years, it will provide an immediate relief at the gas pump. We then need to pursue the entire spectrum of available energy resources.

As for Nancy Pelosi, she needs to be tried for treason AND I'M SERIOUS. It is her responsibility to uphold the Constitution of the United States. Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't that mean that she has a legal responsibility to represent the people of this country? Instead she holds the entire country ransom to her own dictates and agenda. She and her cohorts have single handedly put hundreds of thousands of Americans into hopless despair. If it was Nancy Pelosi that was suffering from this crissis it would be over TOMORROW! She needs to be held criminally accountable.

Energy

We must drill now to provide essential eneregy resources for industry and private consumer needs, while alternative energy sources are developed. At this time alternative energy sources are not cost effective nor are the alternatives available for the American public.

But to solve our energy crises we must develope alternative energy. All forms of alternative energy will be needed.

Energy Plan

We need to solve our problems and get away from relying on our energy resources from foreign countries. We must not only do more drilling in our own country but make use our other resources. We are a nation of intelligent people, please do not tell me we can't figure this out! We also are not dumb...who is benefiting from our reliance of foreign resources?

Energy

Open up all potential oil drilling sites including Alaska sites. Its about time we as a nation started legislating for the good of our citizens and not for special interests.

Oil

I support what you are doing this week. I am going to write my congressman, Congressman Cummings, and let him know that his party should be ashamed of themselves.

Energy

Hurrah for Republicans who pushed this forward--first sign of Republican life I've seen in a looooooong time. It finally sounds like there's a group in congress that actually wants to represent their constituents.

Drilling on US Soil

Yes I believe we need to drill. We should of never quit drilling way back when. If we don't drill and create an energy plan that will help the american population we will be in trouble. One other thing that might help is radient barriers in attic's. This helps keep the heat out in the summer and heat in in the winter. This will drasically reduce the utility bills. New home builders it is require now but homeowners need to know how this can help. So I believe that education on all of this is the most important.
