Cambridge, MA - Today, District 11 Congressman-Elect Mike Conaway arrived at the Harvard University Institute of Politics to partake in a bipartisan seminar with other incoming Congressional freshmen from across the country. A three decade long tradition, the issues conference has a long tradition of helping freshman Members of Congress learn more about the issues affecting Congress and find more ways to participate in the legislative process.

"I am excited to be on the Harvard University Campus to participate in this important, bipartisan program, which has helped prepare many new Members of Congress for their first years in Congress," said Conaway, a CPA and small businessman who won the November 2nd General Election with 77% of the vote. "Harvard has a great tradition and has played a large role in shaping the past, present and future leaders of our great Nation. This program will give me the opportunity to continue building relationships on both sides of the aisle, in addition to arming me with the tools to better represent the people of Texas' 11th Congressional District in Washington."

"We are honored to welcome new Members of Congress to Harvard, to emphasize their important role in our nation's government and how they can make an impact in the legislative process," said Institute of Politics Director Philip Sharp, a former Member of Congress from Indiana (1975-1995). "This seminar, a tradition for 30 years, provides new U.S. House Members with the opportunity to meet and learn from academics, incumbent Representatives of both parties, and each other."

The 16th biennial Program for Newly Elected Members of Congress will run from Monday evening, November 29 through Thursday, December 2 at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. Conaway and other new Members of Congress will participate in a variety of workshops, led by academics and current members of the U.S. House, which provide an important opportunity for new Congressional colleagues to work together across party lines. Topics will include the federal budget and briefings on numerous individual policy matters. Conaway will also join a group of Harvard College students for a discussion on youth political engagement.
